Level 27 of 36 · Book III: Intervals and chords

Sight-reading exercises with chords in G and F major

Left-hand chords meet key signatures: each exercise is in G major (F sharp) or F major (B flat), with triads in the left hand, two a bar, under a melody.

  • Hands together
  • F or G major
  • 4/4 time
  • = 52 to start
= 52 Exercise 1 of 8

8 different exercises, each 8 bars. Listen first, or play it yourself: the music waits for each note.

What level 27 adds

The chords are I, IV and V in close inversions. In G major the V chord, D–F♯–A, holds the F sharp; in F major the IV chord, B♭–D–F, holds the B flat. The right hand plays halves and quarters.

What to watch for

  • The key signature inside chords: a chord containing F or B takes the sharp or flat too.
  • Which key: check the key signature at the start of every exercise. It changes between G and F.
  • Chord shapes don’t change with the key; the black key does.

How to practise it

  • Name the key before you play, and find its sharp or flat in the left hand.
  • Learn the two chords that hold the black key: D–F♯–A in G, and B♭–D–F in F.
  • Use “New exercise” to switch keys often.

Each exercise is new music, written for this level by the same generator the app uses, so you can’t have learned it by ear. Read it once before you play, keep a steady beat, and play on through mistakes. Play it yourself checks your notes from a MIDI keyboard, the mouse or your computer keys, and Print gives you the music alone, to read at the piano.

A new piece every day, at your level

Pianomi is the app these exercises come from. It listens to your MIDI keyboard, grades every note and every beat, and moves you up the 36 levels as your reading improves. It’s free.
